Dogs are highly intelligent creatures. They are one of the very few creatures including humans who are capable of recognizing themselves in a mirror. They also have an excellent memory and a good ability to distinguish between different people. Dogs can hence be easily trained to do a whole host of different things. From keeping themselves clean to fetching your newspaper from the yard to even keeping watch on your child, they can be trained to do a variety of tasks. Let us now take a look at how we can effectively train them.
Rewards Vs Punishment:
There are two basic approaches to training a dog. Giving them a reward when they do what is expected of them is one way and punishing them when they disobey our command is another. Of these, a lot of trainers prefer to use the latter, because it produces results quickly and effectively. However, if you are a pet owner, you have to realize that this method makes your dogs get scared of you. They will obey you as a slave and not really as a friend and companion. Hence, it is always advisable to use rewards when trying to train your dog.
In addition to prompting them to follow your command, using rewards to train them also teaches your dogs the different tones and attitudes of your voice. This enables you to make them do different things for the same command, provided they are delivered in different tones. Another great thing about training with rewards is that your dog will start to love you from the bottom of their hearts. This is in stark contrast to using punishment wherein they will start to fear you and your voice. Once that happens, you will rarely find them willing to play with you joyfully.

Effective Training Method:
The key to training using rewards is to be random when letting your dog have that reward. This will make it hard for them to guess when the reward will actually come and so they will keep doing what it is that you want them to do every single time. However, you should never completely stop giving them treats altogether. This will result in them getting disappointed continuously and they will stop obeying you eventually. If you keep them guessing about when you will actually reward them for obeying the command, you can be sure that they will continue obeying you.
